Los Angeles-based artist SHI has been creating photorealistic paintings on wood for over a decade, with recent works featuring a unique ‘film grain’ effect through resin and experimental materials. This evolution adds depth and a distinct finish to each piece, making them feel almost alive.

Statement
Realism is an ultimate dive into abstraction. For me, capturing shapes and colors that go unnoticed at first glance is the real challenge. Working from a grid, I build each piece one shape at a time, getting as close to perfection as possible.
With a realistic base, I then add layers of resin with unique finishes, letting each layer shape the final look. It’s an act of letting go—letting the resin spill naturally, creating a piece that goes beyond perfection to something unexpected and alive. Or, as my mentor puts it: "you’ve mastered the photo and learned how to give it a twist."
