It’s business 101 these days: POST! POST! POST!
Daily. Hourly. Constantly.
For all the years social media has been around (+ I’m old enough to say that I’ve been on these platforms since their inception) it has grown + evolved into something a business pretty much can’t afford not to use.
It was fun as a consumer of content + it has been a way to experience people + places previously out of reach.
But now, I’m a business owner which equals a content creator.
Every morning, like many (if not all) of you, my day starts with my phone; checking notifications, reacting to news + then putting out content on social media.
A story. A post. A reel. Anything really so your followers don’t think you’re dead, or uninteresting, or not worth following.
Who cares that art is often a long, slow process?
Who cares that a documentary crew isn’t over my shoulder + getting that high quality content the internet has come to expect?
Who cares that you poured your heart out in a caption?
Really? Who cares?
Not many.
But you know who does care about all of that effort that’s being expended on social media?
The one who’s putting it all out there.
Here’s a confession: right before taking leave, I was OBSESSED with my instagram metrics. Constantly opening the app to look at viewers, follower count, likes, etc.
It was getting a bit gross + the anxiety wasn’t great either.
Over the month away from that space though I have been able to rebalance my perspective + my expectations of social media:
- I absolutely love that there is a place where I can share more candid aspects of my studio practice
- I love that there are so many resources + pockets of inspiration, +
- I LOVE that I get to interact with YOU + a community that is genuinely interested in my work
So I’m happy to report that I am back on social media, but not going to let my life OR my art revolve around an algorithm.
All the good stuff is out in the real world anyway.
P.S. my email list is my main priority these days, so if you want a heads up of what I'm doing in the real world, use the form below to sign up.
